But really, do you need that much storage space? Without any context, it\u2019s hard to comprehend the difference between 5GB and 50GB. For starters, how big is a typical WordPress site? And what is a typical website anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much disk space you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you need might be very different from how much space you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s crunch some numbers and put it all into context.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much Disk Space Does the Average WordPress Site Use?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just how much storage space your site needs depends on a number of things. For a start, there are your basic files (WordPress core, plugins, and themes), then you\u2019ve got your database and media files.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on top of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are other things that you might want to store on your server, such as site backups and email hosting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s break down.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress core is currently 30.8MB.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Themes can take up anywhere between 1MB and 10MB of space. For reference, the TwentySeventeen theme is 1.3MB and the most popular ThemeForest theme, Avada, is around 5.5MB (when you only include the theme itself and not all the extra files that come packaged with it).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plugins are a mixed bag, and there\u2019s no real \u201ctypical\u201d size. Jetpack, for instance, is 21.4MB, Yoast SEO is 13.7MB, and W3 Total Cache is 9.4MB. If you add a security plugin to the mix and other tools for adding other essential functionality to your site, you could easily max out 100MB or more just in plugins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media, including images and video, will take up the most space. It\u2019s harder to estimate how much media might take up on your site, though you can save on space if you host your video on a platform like YouTube.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, there\u2019s your database. How much space you need will depend on how many posts you have, as well as comments, spam, plugin and theme configurations, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor you need to think about is email storage. If email is included in your hosting package, this will be included in your disk space. Thanks to email attachments, any email accounts can quickly occupy a huge amount of disk space, especially if you get a lot of spam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different Types of Website Have Different Storage Needs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Websites come in all shapes and sizes. A simple blog will have vastly different needs to a WooCommerce site selling dozens, or even hundreds, of products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a look at what you might need to consider storage-wise depending on the kind of website you have.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blogs and personal websites typically consist of posts, photos and sometimes video files and generally don\u2019t require much space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portfolio, agency, app, and business websites with dynamic content, including images, videos, audio, and scripts, may need more space, particularly if they\u2019re engaged in content marketing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce sites often feature dozens of product pages with high quality product images, which are a crucial part of any online store but can quickly eat up disk space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music, video, and gaming websites that are media-heavy will have huge disk space requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News and digital publications, like blogs and personal sites, also consist of posts, photos and videos, but on a much grander scale. These kinds of sites need a lot of disk space.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average WordPress Site Usage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinsta.com\/blog\/disk-space-wordpress-hosting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsta has published data on average disk space usage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taken from a pool of production WordPress sites that have been hosted on their servers for over four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress core: 8.9 MB (4.9.5+)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average plugins directory (\/wp-content\/plugins): 100 MB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average theme directory (\/wp-content\/themes): 25 MB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average uploads directory (\/wp-content\/uploads): 825 MB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average MySQL database: 85 MB<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, Kinsta has found that the typical client uses approximately 1GB of data for a single WordPress installation. But \u201csometimes this can swing in either direction,\u201d according to Marketing Manager Brian Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome might have a much larger database, but smaller file usage, or the other way around. So on our starter plan, this leaves you with another 4GB (80%) of unused disk space for growth,\u201d Brian explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his post\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinsta.com\/blog\/disk-space-wordpress-hosting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much Disk Space Does Your Hosting Plan Really Need?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Brian argues that in many cases, WordPress users severely overestimate the amount of disk space they need, and this, in turn, \u201cimpacts their purchasing decisions in a negative way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He points to three client examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Client 1 has 11 WordPress sites and uses 4.04GB of their 100GB disk space allocation. <\/span><b>They are below Kinsta\u2019s average, using less than 400MB per site.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Client 2 has three WordPress sites and is using 3.3GB of their 20GB disk space allocation. <\/span><b>They are on part with Kinsta\u2019s average of 1GB per site.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Client 3 has three WordPress site and is using 503.21 MB of their 15GB disk space allocation. <\/span><b>They are significantly below Kinsta\u2019s average, using less than 200MB per site.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Brian explains, these examples are typical of their client base. <\/span><b>Most users use much less disk space than what they\u2019re paying for.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working Out How Much Disk Space You Need<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re interested to know how much disk space your existing website is using, there are a few different ways to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The easiest way is to install a plugin.
